I never like to call myself a birder—maybe more like birder adjacent—because I’m typically pretty bad at it! Everyone in the group will be staring at a bird while my eyes will still be roving in a sad attempt to locate it. I’ll often even hear it practically right in front of my face but still not see it. Usually in these instances, I see it as it’s flying away. Not exactly the best trait for a birder and definitely not for a photographer!
In the case of this White-tailed Trogon, it was pretty far away so I wasn’t able to spot it at first, but I actually saw it before many people in my group! Despite my disappointment with the shot in the field (I was too far away to get a portrait-style shot), I really love what I ended up with: a nicely composed image (love the curving branches) that shows a bird in its environment.
