On National Bird Day, I’m celebrating all the lovely birds that visit me almost daily, that I’ve gotten to know so much better thanks to being home and being able to observe them more closely.
Unfortunately, all the birds we know and love in this country are threatened. The Migratory Bird Treaty Act, the law that makes it possible to fine companies for incidental bird deaths, is under attack by the orange cheeto’s administration. If this new interpretation of the law had been around during the BP oil spill in 2010, BP would not have been fined $100MM for killing 1 million birds, basically because they didn’t “mean” to do it. It’s a dangerous, irresponsible, and counterintuitive way to interpret a law that was put in place to protect birds.
This is part of a larger strategy by the administration to roll back more than 100 environmental rules and laws. And they’re doing everything they can in the last few weeks to fuck things up as much as possible.
You can take action to support the MBTA here. And let’s all continue to seek ways to protect nature and the wildlife around us, or soon there won’t be much left to protect.
