Another cemetery Audubon Christmas Bird Count in the bag! Last week, I went out with Shayna Marchese to do a run of some of the local cemeteries in Hudson County. These are the spots that typically no one wants to cover during the Count so it’s up to us intrepid birders.
It was another relatively quiet year but we did have a couple of highlights!
My best look so far at Monk Parakeets – nesting on a power line pole next to a busy Home Depot, why not! We went looking for their colony last year to no avail so I was happy to see them this time around, though I do want to aim for better looks soon.
A wandering Wild Turkey!
A huge white-tailed deer buck, casually chillin’ in the middle of North Bergen?!
Our final count was 31 species, thanks to the American Kestrel that Shayna spotted while we were stopped at a red light right at the end. Let’s see what next year’s count will hold!
