I was out birding earlier this week, after a night of high migration, but it seemed to be relatively quiet in my local park. High migration the previous night doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll see lots of birds on the ground but I was hoping hard. But after an hour, the birds were still slow to show.
Soon, I heard the unmistakable raucous calls from a large group of Common Grackles flying overhead. They flew by, then circled and came in to land all over the grassy areas, in search of food. As that happened, it seemed like the trees came alive and I saw birds flitting around everywhere. All of sudden, in a tree 3 feet from me, a bird landed on the trunk and started to creep its way up.
The Brown Creeper is a piece of bark come to life! And it’s so fun to watch these little cuties make their way up a tree and then fly back down to start all over (because of their anatomy, they can’t climb down, like a nuthatch).
After having had enough of me (probably), my friend flew to a further tree and hung upside down for a bit, before disappearing into the bark, from where it came.
