I have practically been living at Lincoln Park in Jersey City during this migration season. It’s allowed me to see some awesome stuff. One evening in mid-May I made my way over and it seemed relatively quiet. Suddenly I noticed movement high in a tree.

Blue-winged Warbler
Something super bright yellow was hopping around up there. Initially I thought it might be a goldfinch but there seemed to be something off about that ID. The yellow almost seemed too bright.

Luckily the bird didn’t immediately disappear upon being spotted – in fact, it hung out for quite a while in the tree, and allowed me to get some amazing looks. It was a Blue-winged Warbler!!

I’ve gotten to see them in hand during banding sessions before with Wild Bird Research Group, but never out in the field, so I’m considering this a lifer with an asterisk. The best part was that while I was hanging out with him, a couple of other birders showed up and I was able to point him out. Lifer pie (or cake) for everyone!
